Vinyl Review: Fourth of July – On the Plains

Vinyl Review: Fourth of July – On the Plains

Breezy and seemingly effortless, the 10th anniversary vinyl edition of Fourth of July’s On the Plains comes just at that point in the summer where the heat’s left everything baked dry, while all you really feel like doing is sitting around and listening to music while you cool off. Maybe you’re dancing to the opening cut, “Be Careful,” while trying not to knock things off your coffee table. Or maybe you’re leading group singalongs to “Surfer Dude,” but you’re definitely drinking a tasty beverage and probably bumming cigarettes off your friends, even though you totally plan on quitting when school starts back up in a couple of weeks.

Review of the Conquerors’ ‘Wyld Time’ at Modern Vinyl

wyld-time-cover

Every single song The Conquerors have turned out on their debut LP, Wyld Time, is a catchy, toe-tapping, hip-shaking bit of wonderful. After a year and a half of singles, we finally get a full-length from the rock ‘n’ roll sextet and it’s worth the wait, too — on Wyld Time, the band’s turned out a 10-song romp through the garage, but also through the decades.

Review of Rooftop Vigilantes’ ‘Let It Be’ at Modern Vinyl

rooftop let it be cover

At this point, naming your record Let It Be means you’re referencing both The Beatles and The Replacements, running the risk of roaring past simple cheek and bordering on outright hubris. That said, when your album cover features someone in a Yoda mask drinking a Bud Light, you’re probably more on the cheeky side.

Shadow Rabbits

In its original incarnation, Lawrence Field Day Fest featured the sort of games played during elementary school field days. Those games have gone by the wayside in favor of three days of the best local music the area has to offer. Past years have focused on indie and rock acts, but the fifth edition has the fest branching out with more bands and artists than ever before.

In addition to the fest spotlighting Girls Rock Lawrence, there will be three different local labels showcasing their acts.

The Pitch spoke with the folks behind the Record Machine, High Dive Records and Datura to find out what they have to offer attendees this year.

Psychic Heat signs with High Dive Records

psychic heat
Oh, shit. Lawrence’s premiere psychedelic garage-rockers (we have enough of them for that to be a thing) Psychic Heat signed with Kansas City label High Dive Records. The label and band both announced that info today via their respective social media pages, along with this tasty jam called “Stargazer.” The track’s not new: you’ve been hearing it in promos for KJHK all semester, and it comes from last year’s Brighter and Lighter EP, but it’s definitely a solid taste of what you can expect from their debut full-length, out later this year.
