My mama raised a devil child

Hot damn, kids. Last night was my second time seeing the mighty rock stylings of Mr. Danko Jones and his bandmates. Much like when I saw them open for Turbonegro two years ago, they were tighter than Jessica Alba’s ass. Blues-influenced dirty rock and roll at its finest.

Opening for them were Lawrence locals Ike Turner Overdrive and Lost 80. Neither band had what could charitably called a “good” set. Ike Turner had guitar problems, and spent most of their set fighting some nasty feedback that drew me and several others out onto the Jackpot‘s porch. Still, they managed to kick out a furious rendition of “Midnight Snakebite.”

Lost 80 got to play a whopping twenty minutes, and my brother (their drummer) seemed all sorts of upset. They were an odd fit on the bill as it was, as they play a horn-driven funky pop that was totally out of whack with Ike Turner and Danko’s pure balls-out rock. Good set, though- they even stepped up and played their songs faster and harder than I’d ever seen, and gained the grudging respect of a few early haters in the crowd.

Danko Jones got up on stage and pounded through a forty-five minute set that drew from every album. The crowd was into it, small though it was. The audience could best be described as disgustingly enthusiastic, but sparsely populated. Still, those that were there got the best five dollars’ worth of rock I’ve ever seen. No “Rock Shit Hot”, but they started out with “Samuel Sin”, and there’s no better way to get things going at a rock show than that tasty little number. “Lovercall”, “Bounce”, and “Play the Blues” also made appearances.
