Dr. Auratheft: 2 new mixes
KILL THAT SOUND celebrates the seventies and consists of a very roughly mixed collection of genuine deejay tracks, that is, toasters or reggae vocalists rapping over riddims and versions and thus paving the way for a later generation of hip hop and rap artists. When Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash left the Caribbean to become New York City immigrants, this was the heritage they imported to the US. Again, it is a rough mix, pulled through the echoplex. I picked the tunes pretty much at random – so there’s no tracklist. You can hear great vocalists like Big Youth, U-Roy, Tappa Zukie, Dr. Alimentado, Big Joe, Jah Lloyd and others.
This has been my soundtrack this afternoon. When you’ve got a hot, breezy summer day here in the MidWest, the humidity making it to where you don’t feel like doing much but sitting in the lawn chair and drinking vodka tonics… you need some reggae. This is heavy on the dub side of things- lots of echo and reverb, and it’s got me lazing about the apartment something fierce. For all of you out there who want to be on a beach in the Caribbean, this is the next best thing.
