2-for-1 Conway Twitty: The Musical tickets
The wife and I saw a 45-minute preview of Conway Twitty: The Man, The Music, The Legend, The Musical before George Jones last month at the Topeka Performing Arts Center. It was entertaining, in a tribute show sort of way. The whole musical appears to be attempting to tell Twitty’s life story from the perspective of his daughter.
The whole show is just a tribute performance, really. The guy playing the lead does a dead-on Conway Twitty impersonation, even if his stage presence is pretty much limited to the Taylor Hicks on American Idol, clenched fist and screwed up face style of emoting. It’s not pretty, and works best when you close your eyes, especially considering the fellow’s not near chubby enough. The woman who appears as Loretta Lynn looks nothing like her, but does a pretty fair job of imitation. Anyhow, I got the following e-mail from Ticketmaster, so if you’re interested in a decent tribute show with excellent people watching (a country show at TPAC is worth attending to just sit in the lobby and look at people - we saw a woman in full-on fringed leather jacket and pants at George Jones), then take advantage of this deal for the show Saturday night:
Classic country music fans, get 2-for-1 tickets to see Conway Twitty: The Musical live at Topeka Performing Arts Center, April 11, 2009.
Conway Twitty, The Man, The Music, The Legend, The Musical is Conway Twitty’s story told through the eyes and heart of his children. It is a loving musical scrapbook of memories that is honest, touching, funny, heartbreaking and sincere. This production is a musical journey of his heart, from humble beginnings to Rock and Roll Idol and all the way to a pure Country Legend.

Warning: as the wife and I discovered, upon reflection, most of Conway Twitty’s songs are kind of dirty, and thinking about a tubby man singing songs about laying women down, going further than they’ve been before, etc., makes one kind of ill, especially when presented by a woman who is ostensibly his daughter. Just so you know. But, if that’s your thing, by all means check it out. The music’s good, the performances aren’t bad, and it’s a decent way to kill a Saturday night without much going on except another tribute show, in this case a lesbian Led Zeppelin cover band.
