Reatarded

Head over to Seven Ten Twelve and read this about the latest installment in Matador Records‘ series of Jay Reatard singles. I’ll wait.

Finished?

That’s pretty fucked up (speaking of Fucked Up, they’ve got an mp3 from their forthcoming Matador album, The Chemistry of Common Life up at the Matablog). Really, it blows my mind tos ee where this has gone. The first in the series sat for a couple weeks with multiple copies at the record shop. Then came the second, and it took a week or so to sell out. The third? For a song that was available for free, and a record that might or might not play properly, it certainly got a little out of hand as far as prices, with them selling on eBay for around $35 a pop at the moment (and one sold for $65 a couple days after it was released).

Evidently, it’s going to be pretty hard to get copies of the next three discs in the series. And, of course, as the records get more and more rare, more and more people want copies. I took the advice of my friendly neighborhood record broker and pre-ordered the rest of them, thus ensuring the fact that I won’t have to worry about anything other than showing up at the shop each month and handing over my money. Early adoption makes for happy collectors.
