Goldfinger - Live at the Bottleneck 10/9/97
Ah, 1997. What a year… the year I graduated high school, moved to Lawrence, and started college (the first time). It was also the year I saw Goldfinger twice. Both times were at the Bottleneck, with the first in January. That show had Reel Big Fish, the Skeletones, and Kansas City’s Nuclear Family (featuring future Anniversary frontman Justin Roelofs). It was the coolest show I’d ever been to.
Then, shortly after starting school at KU, I got to see Goldfinger without a curfew or fear of coming home reeking of cigarette smoke. The show was Goldfinger, along with Kara’s Flowers (who a few years later would change their name and sound and become multi-platinum sensations Maroon 5). Fucking awesome stuff. The best part? Browsing some bootleg video sites a couple years later, I came across that very show.
I finally took the time to hook up a VCR to my sound card, and recorded the damn thing to cd. Over the years, I’ve passed copies along to friends whom I’ve met along the way. I’ve discovered that a lot of the cool people whom I’ve met here in Lawrence were at that show. As an added bonus, if you listen really closely, you can hear my incredibly off-key sing-along to OpIvy’s “Knowledge” at the end of the disc.
