Bad Movie Nite brings “bad music, zombies, nudity, aliens, lasers, and more nudity”
Back in July, the Jackpot Saloon here in Lawrence hosted Bad Movie Nite. We missed it, due to a band reunion across the street, but Scott at BMN reached out to see if we could help get the word out for their next trip to town. From his e-mail to us:
” BMN! is a fully realized show consisting of a b-movie with added text commentary and edits, and a “commercial” break. The movie is preceded by a brief clip show consisting of snippets from other b-movies, old commercials, weird music videos, how-to video nonsense, and other bizarre clips. Many of the clips are edited and ‘call back’ to earlier clips in the evening.
Each episode’s feature is a complete mystery. We post a hint to the Facebook event page and it seems that the audience not knowing what they’re in for heightens the overall experience for them. The audience is encouraged to add their own commentary throughout the show. Along with the show, we give out free buttons that are designed by us and relate to what’s on the screen.”
Now, we’re all for promotion, but we had some questions about Bad Movie Nite, and Scott gallantly answered them all for us, as well as hooking us up with some clips.
What’s the “text commentary”? Is it like a snarky Pop Up Video?
During the movie, we add text on the screen to break up dull scenes, punch up already dull scenes, or just to add a ridiculous non sequitur.
Where do you find your movies?
Been collecting VHS tapes for years. I was raised on Halloween, Friday the 13th, and USA Up All Night.
How long have you been doing this?
Publicly we’ve shown BMN! for about three years, but we’ve been making these shows for about seven.
BMN! started in our friend’s basement. We would get together (we still do once a week) and watch a b-movie, making fun of it MST3K-style and endlessly looping ridiculous scenes. Then we started showing an educational or social hygiene film before the movie (to watch while people ordered food or arrived late). Then we started slipping little jokes into the movie to catch people off guard. Then we started creating elaborate clip shows with endless callbacks through that sometimes drift into the movie as well. They got so complex, some of us would stay up all night or take a vacation day from work just to make them.
More and more people started to come to our movie nights and the usual reaction was “What in the hell am I watching?” It became obvious that we had something that someone might want to see. We contacted a few theaters and after a few months, we gained a loyal following that come out for two hours of insanity. They don’t care what we show as long as there are plenty of laughs, callbacks to prior episodes, buttons (we give out themed buttons each show), bad music, zombies, nudity, aliens, lasers, and more nudity. We have everything in ample doses.
USA Up All Night and TNT Night Flight. I used to love watching those when I was younger. It was a whole night of alternative programming with late night commercials for escort services and bad AS SEEN ON TV non-sense along with movies where the host would periodically insert themselves into the film they’re showing. Of course all the scandalous parts are removed. We just do all of the above and leave to the naughty bits in.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t ask about Horror Remix and your awareness of that — it’s pretty big here in Lawrence, and I’m curious as to what differentiates Bad Movie Nite from Horror Remix?
I’ve heard of Horror Remix, but have not seen it. It’s like an anthology right? Sounds like fun. BMN! is more of a night of programming. We have a preshow for people who come in early, followed by our intro clip (below), a crazy clip show full of b-movie clips, how-to videos, old commercials, bad music videos, and god knows what else, then the movie, which is shaved down a little bit to weed out some of the boring stuff (and add in some added clips).
Also, every month the movie is a complete mystery. We give you a hint and some screen shots online. We want you coming in have next-to-no-idea what you’re about to see.
Are there any rights issues that arise, or is this so left-of-center that there’s no chance of anything popping up?
BMN! is a smorgasbord. There’s a lot of stuff in there and we mainly deal with moldy vhs-only movies.
When the next Bad Movie Nite in Lawrence, and what’s the theme?
I think soon! Probably space-themed. The mystery movie hint is ESCAPE FROM SPACE PRISON. An 80′s T&A classic.
